The latest iteration of the BMW 5-series for 2025 may have dialled back slightly on the traditional sports-sedan edge that characterized its predecessors, yet it retains its position as a formidable contender in the realm of mid-size luxury sedans, thanks to its sophisticated interior and cutting-edge technology.

The 2025 version of the 5-series introduces only a few updates. Notably, BMW has expanded the lineup with the inclusion of the elite 550e model this year. This top-tier variant boasts a potent 483-horsepower plug-in hybrid system that harmoniously integrates a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine with an electric motor, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive capabilities.

The BMW 5 Series lineup includes the 530i, 540i, and the plug-in hybrid 550e. The base model 530i features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 255 horsepower and is available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations. The 540i elevates the experience with a standard all-wheel-drive system and a robust 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six powerplant, complemented by a 48-volt mild hybrid system for enhanced efficiency. Meanwhile, the 550e combines a turbo inline-six engine with an electric motor to muster a prodigious 483 horsepower, paired with standard all-wheel drive for superior traction.

Equipped specifically with a 19.4-kWh battery pack, the 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid is expected to deliver approximately 40 miles on a single charge, adding exceptional efficiency to its repertoire of capabilities.

Every vehicle in the 5-series lineup boasts an expansive curved digital panel, featuring a 12.3-inch customizable gauge display alongside a 14.9-inch touchscreen for infotainment purposes. This technology is already established in other BMW models, including the luxurious 7-series sedan and the innovative iX electric SUV, offering a user-friendly interface as per our assessments. While a head-up display remains an additional option, standard features across the series include both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an immersive Harman/Kardon sound system, and BMW's exclusive AirConsole gaming platform, which is available for use exclusively when the vehicle is stationary.
